Russia names action-movie star Seagal as envoy for US

Russian President Vladimir Putin granted Russian citizenship to Seagal in a 2016 ceremony and personally presented the actor with a new Russian passport.

Russian Federation has appointed the U.S. actor Steven Seagal as a special envoy to improve ties with the United States.

Seagal's unpaid position would "facilitate relations between Russian Federation and the United States in the humanitarian field, including cooperation in culture, arts, public and youth exchanges". He will receive no salary, the Ministry said, adding, "It's a case of people's diplomacy intersecting with traditional diplomacy". He has also been accused of sexual misconduct by several women amid the viral #MeToo campaign, which he has denied.

Trump has drawn criticism for his reluctance at times to speak out against Russia and Russian President Vladimir Putin, particularly on the issue of election interference.

Long before Seagal and Putin became buds, the dual citizen tried in jest to influence the Russian president's reputation overseas. 'I have worked tirelessly in this direction for many years unofficially and I am now very grateful for the opportunity to do the same thing officially'.

Steven Seagal's new Russian position is a ceremonial post, which is similar to a United Nations Goodwill Ambassador, meaning that the former action star won't have any official responsibility.

Seagal was cited by Kremlin-backed TV station RT as welcoming the appointment.

For more than a decade Seagal, who according to his own website is 66, has been a regular visitor to Russian Federation. His movies, including such titles as "Under Siege" and 'Sniper: Special Ops, ' are popular with Russian audiences.

He has previously hung out with Russia's Putin, a fellow martial arts fan.
