OH to have a sales-tax holiday

It may be a little early for back-to-school shopping, but if you're in need of certain items, you might just want to hit the stores a little early this year.

"This weekend is a great opportunity for Ohioans to stock up on supplies for the school year", said McColley in a news release.

It's back-to-school shopping time, and your friends in nearby states may be gearing up to buy computers, clothing and school supplies free of sales tax this weekend. Hollenbeck says many shoppers are confused about purchases that quality-or don't-for tax free status.

School instructional materials are defined by the state tax department as, "reference books, reference maps and globes, textbooks and workbooks". In Independence, 62 different schools have their supply lists on Walmart's app.

Clothing items that are priced up to $75 will be tax exempt.

This is the fourth consecutive year of the tax relief in OH, made possible by House Bill 49.

The Saturday after Thanksgiving is also a tax in New Mexico, thanks to legislation passed in March. The claim was that it cost the state $13 million in revenue and lawmakers created a tax reform bill against it.

According to the South Carolina Department of Revenue, its estimated between $2 million and $3 million were saved by shoppers during the holiday weekend.

"The people of OH deserve to keep more of the money they earn so that they can more easily provide these essentials for their families", said McColley. "It's nice, but in a state struggling to pay for roads and schools, I don't know at the end of the day if that tax break is a tax break for any of us".
