Democratic leaders said they'd like another shot at President Trump's former lawyer after he pleaded guilty Thursday to lying to Congress about plans to build a Trump Tower in Moscow.
Mueller's decision to schedule Cohen's new guilty plea just as Trump was leaving the White House on a foreign trip where he was to meet one on one with Russian President Vladimir Putin echoed Mueller's indictment of a dozen Russians for interfering in the 2016 election just days before Trump was scheduled to meet with Putin in Helsinki.
Mr Cohen said in his statement to Congress he had claimed to have had limited contact with Mr Trump concerning the project, when in fact it had been "more extensive".
It was actually discussed "multiple times" within the Trump Organization, and these discussions carried on into June 2016, less than six months before the election. He said they were "very brave" for resisting Mueller's investigation.
"Mueller's investigation must continue - free from political interference by the president - until the truth is out", said Mark Warner, vice chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee.
Asked Thursday about the plea deal, Trump dismissively said that Cohen "was convicted of various things unrelated to us".
"This was a deal that didn't happen", Trump said of the purported real estate project.
During the campaign, Cohen acted as Trump's point person in an attempt to build the Trump development in Moscow.
Sater and Cohen continued to email about the foundering project well into June 2016, soon after a much-scrutinized meeting at Trump Tower in NY between Trump's son, Don Jr., son-in-law Jared Kushner, campaign chairman Paul Manafort and several Russian attendees, purportedly to discuss the possibility of "dirt" on Hillary Clinton.
Mack Brown Hired As UNC's Next Football Coach
Miles and Brown left retirement from the world of college football coaching to rejoin the Power Five ranks in the past two weeks. After coaching at UNC, Brown went on to become head coach at Texas where he built up a 158-48 record over 16 seasons.
He said Trump is clearly ready for the investigation to come to a close, but more importantly, the country is ready for it to end.
Asked by reporters if she was concerned about Mr Cohen's plea, top House of Representatives Democrat Nancy Pelosi said, "Of course, he lied to the American people".
"But zero, I mean I will tell you right now, zero, I have nothing to do with Russian Federation", he said.
"As Cohen well knew, Cohen's representations about the Moscow Project ... were false and misleading", the court filing says.
Despite the long relationship between the president and Cohen, Trump has sought to distance himself from his former lawyer, who pleaded guilty in August to campaign finance violations, tax evasion and bank fraud.
On June 9, 2016, Donald Trump Jr., Manafort and Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, met with a Kremlin connected lawyer at Trump Tower about getting "dirt" on Democrat Hillary Clinton.
"Moscow is going to be huge", Trump told Playboy magazine in a 1997 interview.
Trump ultimately secured the Republican nomination for president just weeks later in July 2016.
Come Jan. 3, the House version of that committee will no longer help Trump undercut special counsel Robert Mueller's Russian Federation investigation and will nearly certainly help it instead. Cohen is scheduled to be sentenced December 12.
