More than 50 people were dead after a train ran into people watching Dussehra celebrations near train track in Amritsar's Choura Bazar on Friday.
In Amritsar, video footage showed the effigy of the demon Ravana had just been lit and firecrackers were going off when the train ploughed into the crowd, who were craning their necks and applauding the show.
Another witness said the victims didn't realize that a train was coming because the fireworks were too loud.
Two trains - Amritsar-Mumbai Golden Temple and Amritsar-Dehradun - are stuck at Amritsar because of the accident, the officials said.
Wails and cries of people filled the air as friends and relatives frantically looked for their near and dear ones. Many bodies could not even be identified.
People shouted slogans against local MLA Navjot Kaur Sidhu, who was present as chief guest during the event.
Bystanders rushed around the bodies and police tried to carry away the injured.
Revenue Minister Sukhbinder Sarkaria deputed to immediately reach Amritsar to oversee rescue operations.
