Abe, who also attended a third-country investment conference and met with students at elite Peking University, is to return to Japan on Saturday.
Osuga did note that universal values and maritime security were important principles of Japan's engagement with China.
Abe said he sought frank talks with Xi and Li covering North Korea and trade issues.
In a statement before he leaves for Japan on Saturday to attend the annual summit on October 28 and 29, Modi said India's partnership with Japan is of great substance and objective. In an apparent reference to the plight of the Uyghur minority, Abe told Li that Japan and the global community were "paying close attention to the human rights situation in China", according to a Japanese government official who briefed reporters.
Even though Abe spent just three days in China, observers said the trip was an important step in the two countries' rapprochement, and was partly triggered by the uncertainty that has grown up around the United States' policies in Asia since Donald Trump took over as U.S. president. "They need to improve relations as a response to the uncertainty brought about by Trump in Asia".
This will be PM Modi's third visit to Japan since 2014 and his 12th meeting with Mr Abe.
Ahead of the briefing, China and Japan signed an agreement to boost cooperation in the securities markets including the listing of exchange-trade funds (ETFs), and facilitate smoother customs clearance.
While anxious about China's growing naval power, Japan is also keen for closer economic ties with its biggest trading partner, but it must manage that rapprochement without upsetting its key security ally, the United States.

The aide, Mahinda Amaraweera, said Rajapaksa has the majority needed in the 225-member Parliament to run a stable government. The coalition government consisted of the UPFA and the United National Party (UNP), led by Wickremesinghe.

As this year marks the 40th anniversary of the signing of the Japan-China Treaty of Peace and Friendship, Abe said the treaty marks the starting point for bilateral relationship between Japan and China. Last month, a Japanese submarine participated in war games in the South China Sea for the first time, then visited Vietnam, an indication that Japan was prepared to stand with other countries against China's territorial claims in the crucial waterway.
During meetings with Chinese Premier Li Keqiang, Prime Minister Abe stressed that without stability in the East China Sea there would not be a true improvement in the relationship.
Abe expressed hopes for closer ties and a shift in bilateral relations from an age of "competition to cooperation", an apparent reference to rifts that until recently have muted Japanese business interests in China.
"The Chinese Communist Party always has this history card against Japan in their pocket", Takahara said. It is also expected to promote trust, which has been fragile at times since they restored diplomatic relations in 1972.
"Coordination and cooperation between China and Japan will help curb trade protectionism in the world while providing a stable and predictable policy environment for cooperation between enterprises", said Jin.
"Just looking how the flags of both countries are hung next to each other on Changan Avenue makes me uncomfortable", said a user on China's Weibo microblog platform.
