Mrs Trump was coming from Kamuzu International Airport to Kamuzu Palace during her five hours charity trip to Malawi.
ABC News says its reporter Tom Llamas will interview Melania Trump during her trip to Africa for a "20/20" special to air October 12.
She added: "My husband and I appreciate all that you're doing to serve our country".

The US First Lady then visited Chipala Primary in Malawi's capital, Lilongwe.
"Trump's motorcade traveled along a roadside where a handful of white protesters greeted the first lady with handmade signs, including a couple that said "Me Too" and "#notashithole!"

It was revealed this week that 30-40 minutes were removed , containing some of Hardy's favorite bits. Hardy was fond of some that displayed the dark comedy aspect and some puppeteering.
The US First Lady laughed after one of the baby elephants made a sudden move and she momentarily lost her footing.
She visited the school to highlight the benefits of a USAID scheme to support African education, which has seen the U.S. distribute 9.6million books to schools across Malawi.
Llamas, who is weekend anchor of "World News Tonight", is among the reporters following the first lady on her first solo overseas trip. "We are happy today, we are happy today to see you".
"I wanted to be here to see the successful programs that (the) United States is providing the children and thank you for everything you've done", the first lady said at a book donation ceremony in the school library. The soccer balls, along with tote bags donated for the teachers, sported the logo of "Be Best", the child well-being initiative Mrs. Trump launched this year.
"I was heartened to spend time with the students and was honoured to donate school supplies and soccer balls", she said. "It is a lovely thing to see", wrote Trump.
The two will later visit the Kenya National Theatre where they will be treated to cultural performances.
