Trump spent the run-up to the storm focused on criticism of the federal response to a hurricane that battered Puerto Rico previous year, rejecting the official death toll of almost 3,000 and claiming Democrats manufactured the number to make him "look bad".
With Wilmington still mostly an island surrounded by Hurricane Florence's floodwaters and people waiting for hours for handouts of necessities like food, North Carolina's governor is pleading with thousands of evacuees to be patient and not return home just yet.

The attack happened yesterday around noon at Cape Cod while the victim and his friend were riding boogie boards along the shore. The Wellfleet Police Department says it is working with the National Park Service and State Police to investigate the incident.

The Transportation Department advised northbound motorists to take a wide detour around the area by using I-85 from Georgia through South Carolina's Upstate and on to Charlotte.
"People need to understand this will not be a week-long process", Jordan said.
