After reaching a terrifying Category 4 peak of 140 mph (225 kph) earlier in the week, Florence made landfall as a Category 1 hurricane at 7:15 a.m.at Wrightsville Beach, a few miles (kilometers) east of Wilmington and not far from the SC line.
The US National Hurricane Center said the storm is packing winds of 140km/h, but it is expected to weaken from a tropical storm as it moves north from the Azores towards Ireland and the UK.
"My staff and I will continue to monitor Tropical Storm Isaac", said VITEMA Director Mona L. Barnes.
Bands of rain from Tropical Depression Isaac continue to drench the Lesser Antilles.
Isaac's maximum sustained winds have decreased to near 55 km/h with higher gusts.
The Miami-based center says the center of the eye moved ashore with top sustained winds of 90 miles per hour (150 kph), making Florence a Category 1 hurricane in terms of wind intensity.
A NOAA Hurricane Hunter plane that investigated the oncoming Tropical Storm Isaac Wednesday evening and found that the system has weakened a bit, according to the National Weather Service.
While now classified as a hurricane, Helene will be downgraded to a storm by the time it reaches the shores of Northern Ireland.

Meanwhile, Hurricane Helene will move away from Cabo Verde Islands into the open waters of the central Atlantic through the week, posing no direct threat to land.
Through the afternoon though, they should begin to fade from Northern Ireland and southern Scotland, as a fresh even strong at first West to South Westerly wind decreases.
Maui Mayor Alan Arakawa said he hoped the effects of the storm would be limited.
The storm's center was about 170 miles southeast of Wilmington at 8 a.m. Thursday, according to a National Hurricane Center briefing.
