The security forces opened fire with guns, water cannons and tear gas, and protesters burned cars and threw rocks as helicopters hovered above Harare.
Opposition leader Nelson Chamisa's Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) has accused President Emmerson Mnangagwa's ZANU-PF party and the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission of using underhand tactics to steal the election from them.
As gunfire echoed through downtown Harare, Mnangagwa called for calm and urge patience while results were collated.
Zimbabwe was once one of Africa's most promising economies but under Mugabe's rule became tainted by corruption, mismanagement and diplomatic isolation.
The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission has yet to release even preliminary results, but it has five days to release the final tally, and it says it is confident of doing so within that time frame.

Several hundred MDC supporters crowded around the party's headquarters Wednesday and started marching toward the electoral commission after Mr. Chamisa declared himself the victor. The commission said two seats were won by smaller parties and 58 seats had yet to be declared.
Opposition supporters clogged the streets of Zimbabwe's capital Wednesday as the country awaited the results of the first leadership election since the end of Robert Mugabe's strongman rule past year. They believe the election has been stolen, and are demanding the MDC be announced as victor.

The results of the race are expected on Saturday and the European Union mission says a more detailed statement on how the election results were handled will be released soon.
