People are evacuating from Blackwater Creek Trail in Lynchburg because the College Lake Dam may fail.
County officials reported the dam's "imminent failure" at around 9:30 p.m. The dam "is being closely monitored ... for any signs of structural failure" as another inch or so of rain is expected Friday near Lynchburg, 50 miles east of Roanoke, according to the National Weather Service.
Several roads already were flooded or closed at that time, with local fire and police departments sending out boats and squads to rescue people.
Heavy rains and flash floods have struck a wide swath of the country from the Carolinas to New England.
The Lynchburg Sheriff's Office says the E.C. Glass High School auditorium is available for any residents who are evacuating their homes.

The city of Lynchburg is the closest settlement downstream of the structure. City officials posted pictures Thursday of rescuers using a raft to take families from a flood-threatened apartment complex as well as the partial collapse of one road into an adjacent creek. The dam has been under survey by the city for years as a safety hazard.
And every proposed fix would cost millions of dollars.
