Fox News senior judicial analyst Judge Andrew Napolitano expressed his displeasure with the judge presiding over Paul Manafort's tax and bank fraud trial in Virginia by telling him to stop making this about him. They also need to prove he did so with intent and not by mistake.
Federal Bureau of Investigation forensic accountant Morgan Magionos brought Manafort's fashion tastes back to the spotlight.
During cross examination, Manafort's attorneys pointed out Gates' extramarital affairs, including a woman in London who may have had a hand in the financial crimes Gates to which admitted, Politico reported.
But Gates nonetheless faced aggressive questioning by Manafort's lawyer, Kevin Downing, who at one point asked him, "After all the lies you've told and the fraud you've committed, you expect this jury to believe you?"
Citizens Bank mortgage loan assistant Melinda James testified about her communications with Manafort and Rick Gates, the political consulting titan's longtime deputy, regarding a loan application that contained falsified information to increase Manafort's chances of getting the request approved.
Earlier on Tuesday, the prosecution had continued to question Gates, who described how millions of dollars were allegedly funnelled from entities controlled by Ukrainian businessmen into Manafort's shell companies in Cyprus.
Ellis' comment came after a dramatic three days in which Gates, Manafort's protégé, implicated his former boss in a yearslong financial scheme while also enduring stinging attacks on his character and credibility.
But when Downing tried to question Gates on Tuesday about what the special counsel team had asked him about the Trump campaign, Andres objected.
"I'm not happy with this judge", Napolitano said on "The Daily Briefing" on Wednesday.
Trump in warning over trading with Iran
The stiff economic sanctions ratchet up pressure on the Islamic Republic despite statements of deep dismay from European allies. US President Donald Trump said that sanctions reimposed on Iran were most biting ever.
Magionos testified that she reviewed 31 accounts tied to Manafort in Cyprus, St. Vincent and the Grenadines and the United Kingdom, and Manafort was listed as the beneficial owner on at least some of them.
Greg Andres, a prosecutor on special counsel Robert Mueller's team, somewhat softened the blows Manafort's attorney had inflicted during his cross examination.
T.S. Ellis III, the presiding judge over the Eastern Virginia District trial, has become a lightning rod for outside criticism over his rough treatment of Mueller's prosecution team.
"The jury is very sensitive to what it perceives, correctly or not, to be the judge's view of the case", Gillers said.
Manafort, 69, a veteran Republican political operative, was Trump's campaign chairman from May to August 2016, when he was forced to step down amid questions about his work for Ukraine's former pro-Russian leader Viktor Yanukovych. Maybe I made a mistake.
In applying for the loan, Manafort claimed the property was a second home, but prosecutors introduced as evidence a 2015 tax return indicating the property generated about $100,000 in rental income. "In reality, it was basically money moving between accounts". And the fact that after loaning Manafort millions of dollars Calk became an economic adviser to Trump casts doubt on Trump's famous pledge to "drain the swamp" and puncture the rampant influence peddling in Washington.
Ellis told the jury Thursday that he was "probably wrong" in his belief Wednesday that he had told prosecutors none of their witnesses would be allowed to observe the trial.
"You may put that aside..." I hope Manafort said "thank you" at least.
Gates, 46, has pleaded guilty to conspiracy and is cooperating with the government as it prosecutes Manafort for allegedly evading USA taxes on tens of millions of dollars earned from political consulting work they did together in Ukraine from 2006 to 2014.
