One of the callers reportedly told 911 that a man broke into her home.
Police said they arrived to a "very chaotic and violent scene" and officers heard gunshots fired inside the home.
He said evidence at the scene suggests that the officer who shot Black was outside the home when he opened fire, but he's eager to see body camera footage to determine exactly what happened.
The man shot by the officer, identified by a family member to NBC affiliate KUSA as 73-year-old Richard Black, was transported to a hospital where he died.
Upon further investigation, Aurora police learned the armed man lived at the house, and had just shot and killed an intruder before encountering officers.
The intruder seriously injured a child in the home, but the injuries were not life-threatening, Metz said.
"This is a very heartbreaking and tragic situation for everyone involved", Police Chief Nick Metz said. "We are providing assistance through our victim advocates to help the family of the deceased resident through this very hard time", Metz said.
