President Donald Trump's visit to Britain includes a gala dinner, tea with the queen and lunch with the prime minster, but his itinerary will keep him out of central London on Friday, when large protests are planned.
But any good vibrations from that moment soon dissipated when Trump, the same day, announced plans to ban migrants from seven Muslim-majority countries - a decision that drew fierce global criticism and appeared to blindside May.
Protests are expected against Trump, whose policies - including a travel ban on a number of predominantly Muslim countries, detention of child migrants on the US-Mexico border and imposition of tariffs on European Union steel and aluminium exports - have all been criticised by the UK.
Yesterday, the Guardian newspaper reported, "The UK police mobilisation for Trump's visit would be the largest since the 2011 English riots", when London was shocked by five days of violence and unrest, with a deployment of 10 000 police.
"It is in the interests of the U.K.to stand up and take a firm moral stance", said Zoe Gardner, a researcher and spokesperson of the Stop Trump Coalition, which is organizing protests this week in cities across the country.
His "America First" policies, including the decision to pull the USA out of the Paris climate accord and the nuclear deal with Iran, also have brought him into conflict with Britain's leaders over substantive geopolitical issues.
