"I think the relationship will be a very good one", he said.
Calderon congratulated Obrador on his victory and also wished him success.
That violence was on many minds as television stations carried live images of Lopez Obrador weaving through Mexico City's notoriously chaotic traffic in the front passenger seat of a compact vehicle that was at least five years old.
Carlos Urzua, Lopez Obrador's pick to be his finance minister when he takes office on December 1, told Reuters on Monday that the new government will aim to reform the pension system and to reduce costs at Pemex during its six-year term.
While what he does on the domestic front will surely be important, his administration will be defined by his approach to dealing with the United States.

CITY (AP) _ U.S. President Donald Trump is sending his congratulations to Mexico's Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador on his apparent victory in Sunday's presidential election.
The next president is unlike most of his predecessors in many ways: Devoutly religious, he is a career activist instead of a lawyer, military officer or businessman, and the first president in a century to speak in a marked regional accent, from his native Tabasco state in Mexico's tropical lowlands.
But Lopez Obrador said he supports reaching a deal on renegotiating the North American Free Trade Agreement with the United States and Canada.
Disappointed with the PRD's support for Mr. Peña Nieto's economic initiatives, Mr. Obrador founded a new party, the National Regeneration Movement in 2014, and won the elections in 2018 with 53.8% of the votes in his favour.
"It's worth cautioning that we still have little clarity on Amlo's economic policies", said Edward Glossop, an economist at Capital Economics.
According to a poll by Oraculus, Lopez Obrador was favored by 48.1 percent of voters. We have a border of more than 3,000 kilometres, more than 12 million Mexicans live in the United States.
