Two days after U.S. President Donald Trump ordered an end to the separation of families at the border, federal authorities Friday were still working on a plan to reunite an estimated 1,800 children with their parents and keep immigrant households together.
"Republicans should stop wasting their time on Immigration until after we elect more Senators and Congressmen/women in November".
After a week of saturation coverage on illegal immigrant parents separated from their children - a policy Trump reversed under public and political pressure - the president stressed that so-called Angel Families have been "permanently separated".
Immigrants who remained locked up and separated from their families struggled to get in touch with children being held in many cases hundreds of miles away.
Following that vote, House Republican leaders abruptly postponed voting on a compromise immigration measure amid ongoing infighting between conservative and moderates.
"What the president just signaled is, 'I'm not going to be there.' And therefore I think people will take the cue", Sanford said.
The first bill would have provided almost $25 billion for a border wall, made steep cuts to legal immigration programs, and provided temporary legal status for young people brought into the country as children. They have expressed frustration that the Republican bills were crafted without their input.
Hermilo Moralez, who was 19 at the time of the murder, is a Belize national who was living in the U.S. illegally. He met with parents who had children killed by immigrants in the country illegally to make the point that they are the real victims of weak borders. Last year, not long after House Republicans stood in the Rose Garden with Trump celebrating passage of their replacement for former President Barack Obama's health care law, he mocked their legislation as a "mean" bill.
The two were reunited at about 2:30 a.m.at Baltimore-Washington International Airport in Maryland, hours after a Justice Department lawyer told a U.S. District Court judge the child would be released.
Oil hit by flaring tensions over U.S.-China trade
Oil analysts were expecting oil prices to touch $100 a barrel mark after Trump imposed fresh sanctions on Iran. If US oil finds it hard to enter China, it would try to find a way to sell in India, the other main consumer.
"We have to be very, very strong on the border".
Administration officials on Wednesday refused to say what they would do with the migrant children in three weeks should they fail to get an exemption from a court or pass legislation through Congress.
House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte, R-Va., said he "absolutely" would continue the immigration push.
Despite Trump's stance, House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy said the chamber would press ahead on legislation next week.
Thursday, former Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey told an audience in London the family separations could be the president's most harmful misstep yet - and suggested Trump is trying to dodge the matter.
Trump endorsed the compromise bill during a closed-door rally with House Republicans on Tuesday at the Capitol.
Which is to say: The president has (apparently) decided that he would like to continue torturing small migrant children - and holding Dreamers hostage - until voters deliver him a nativist Senate, or Democrats agree to pay his ransom, and vote to fund his wall and slash legal immigration.
As part of his defense for his zero tolerance border crossing policy, Trump has frequently pointed to - and exaggerated - the threat posed by members of the violent gang MS-13 who have entered the United States.
Trump struck similar notes Thursday, when he tweeted, "What is the objective of the House doing good immigration bills when you need 9 votes by Democrats in the Senate, and the Dems are only looking to Obstruct (which they feel is good for them in the Mid-Terms)".
