High-speed chases aren't uncommon in some USA states bordering Mexico, as smugglers and others attempt to flee checkpoints and outrun the Border Patrol.
Dimmit County Sheriff Marion Boyd told KSAT that the chase reached speeds of about 100 miles per hour.
Some of the injured people were taken by helicopter to San Antonio, about 90 miles northeast.
Thee were 14 people in the vehicle, including the driver and a passenger who were both USA citizens. The driver, who is believed to be a United States citizen, was among those transported. In 2012, 15 unauthorized immigrants were killed in Goliad County, Tex. when their truck ran off a highway. Images from the scene showed the SUV badly wrecked in the middle of the road. "We've seen this many, many times", Boy said. According to News 4 in San Antonio, 12 of the people inside the vehicle were ejected during the crash and four were pronounced dead at the scene.
