Air15 video showed significant damage to the self-driving van, as well as a silver sedan, after the collision near Chandler Village Drive and Chandler Boulevard. The incident was the first death involving a fully autonomous vehicle. The sedan's front part got totally wrecked with the front glass broken out of the vehicle, however, the van seems to be in better shape with front tire crushed into the car's chassis. According to the police, there are some minors injuries to the drivers of both the vehicles without any serious impact. As the Honda swerved, the vehicle continued to head eastbound into the westbound lanes of Chandler Boulevard and struck the Waymo vehicle. Both the Waymo self-driving auto and the Honda sedan had to be towed from the scene of the accident.
Reportedly the sedan was traveling eastbound and swerved to avoid another auto at an intersection, straying into the westbound lanes and hitting the Waymo van. According to preliminary data, the initiator of the accident was another vehicle. The spokesman also said that the Waymo vehicle was operating in autonomous mode at the time of the collision, and that the operator only suffered minor injuries in the crash.
