Now, imagine the damage that could be done by an asteroid the size of a house entering the atmosphere at more than 45,000 km/h.
Astronomers estimate the asteroid to be 71 metres in diameter (though it could be larger). For example, 2010 WC9 more of the meteorite, which in 2013 exploded over Chelyabinsk, injuring hundreds of people.
Even if the actual size of the 2010 WC9 was close to the maximum estimate, the space rock did not pose a threat to humanity.
Asteroid 2010 WC9 is an Apollo type space rock. On May 15th in Eastern Time, it was only 126,000 miles from Earth. It might get as bright as magnitude +11, which would make it bright enough to be seen in amateur telescopes pointed at the correct location and time.

However, only days later, on December 1st of that year, the asteroid was last observed as scientists lost sight of it as it became extremely faint.
The asteroid 2010 WC9 was temporarily lost after it was spotted by the Catalina Sky Survey (CSS), a space project backed by NASA's Near Earth Object Observation Program (NEOO), in November 2010. The big news here is that this will be one of the closest approaches ever observed of an asteroid this size.
