American officials say Israel informed the U.S. of its plans to strike a Syrian airbase days after a chemical weapon attack left dozens of civilians dead in a rebel-held city east of Damascus.
Syria and its main ally Russian Federation blamed Israel for carrying out an attack on a Syrian air base near Homs on Monday which followed reports of a poison gas attack by President Bashar al-Assad's forces on a rebel-held town. It said the other three landed in the western part of the T4 base.
Syrian state TV quoted an unnamed military official as saying that Israeli F-15 warplanes fired several missiles at T4.
U.S. President Donald Trump said earlier on Sunday there would be a "big price to pay" after medical aid groups reported dozens of civilians, including many children and women, were killed by poison gas in a besieged rebel-held town.
The Syrian government denied its forces had launched any chemical assault.
The medical relief organization Syrian American Medical Society (SAMS) and the civil defense service, which operates in rebel-held areas, said in a joint statement 49 people had been killed in the suspected gas attack.
"An aggression was perpetrated on T-4 air base in several strikes that is most likely to be an American attack", state television said in a news flash.
It was not initially clear who carried out the attack after both the USA and France denied that they were responsible for the attack. The gas attack was blamed on Assad.

The fast-paced developments threatened to further hike tensions between the USA and Russian Federation, which has in the past warned against any US military action against President Bashar Assad's government.
In response, the Trump administration ordered the the launch of a barrage of Tomahawk cruise missiles against a Syrian airbase, marking the first time the US had directly targeted the Syrian regime since the start of the country's civil war in 2011. Israel hit the base in February, after it said an Iranian drone that violated Israeli airspace took off from it.
The EU appealed in a statement on Sunday that Assad allies Russian Federation and Iran "use their influence to prevent any further attack and ensure the cessation of hostilities and de-escalation of violence" as agree under a United Nations resolution.
A Syrian war-monitoring group says 14 people, including Iranians, were killed in a missile attack early in the morning on an air base in central Syria.
Advisors have told the President that it is not wise to hastily withdraw troops from Syria.
It is believed the strikes are in response to an alleged chemical gas attack on Saturday.

Moscow said some 8,000 fighters and 40,000 civilians would be bussed out and said that proved "no chemical weapons were used in this area".
