Local law enforcement, the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA), and healthcare systems are working together to take back old medications that citizens no longer need on National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day on Saturday.
The Stickney Water Reclamation Plant in Cicero is one of several locations taking part in the national initiative by the Drug Enforcement Administration.
"Take Back Day helps to keep drugs out of the hands of abusers and potentially save lives by removing unused painkillers and controlled drugs from homes", said DEA Acting Administrator Robert W. Patterson.
The event kicks off from 10 a.m.to 2 p.m. right here at KIII Studios located at 5002 SPID. The drugs were then boxed up and taped shut by Portland police officers, who carted them away for safe disposal.
"You don't want to have these left over medications laying around the house.so that's what brought me here", said Heather Jahnke, who dropped off a bag.

Deputy Jason Vogel with the Brown County Sheriff's Office collected unwanted pills in the Allouez site, the site collected more than 115 pounds of pills on Saturday.
"They don't ask any questions, we don't ask any questions", he said.
"Anytime you have a minor surgery, you get a prescription, and you don't use all your prescription or you just forget about, we don't think about those things".
