At approximately 3:00pm this afternoon (Thursday, April 20), two Gilchrist County Deputy Sheriffs were shot and killed in the Ace China restaurant in downtown Trenton, after a suspect walked up to business and shot both deputies through the window.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the situation, but the motive for the attack was unclear.
The shooter, identified by authorities as John Hubert Highnote, 59, of Bell, had no known history with the Sheriff's Office, said Lt. Scott Tummond, a Levy County public information officer who is helping Gilchrist County.
Trenton is a small city 50 miles west of Gainesville, with a population of 2,315, according to the latest available census data.
"What do you expect happens when you demonize law enforcement to the extent that it's been demonized?" he asked at one point.
Ramirez was a seven-year veteran of law enforcement who had a wife and two young children.

"They just wanted to go get something to eat and they just wanted to do their jobs". "After 26 years of doing this, there is nothing that can prepare you for senseless deaths", Schultz said.

"Sheriffs from throughout the area and state officials are supporting the agency and citizens of Gilchrist County with protective patrols, investigative assistance, and any other needs", GCSO said in a Facebook post.
Deputies from the neighboring Alachua County Sheriff's Office are answering calls for service in Gilchrist County to allow the local office time for healing.
"As we have in the past when faced with adversity and tragedy, the people of this community band together to press forward", said Lee Deen.
"They gave their lives so that we can all be safe", he said.
Some folks who lined the streets knew Ramirez and Lindsey.
After the shooting, Schultz said that there is hatred in the USA for law enforcement right now.
"Prayers are with their families as they mourn the devastating loss of their loved ones".
President Donald Trump tweeted about the shooting offering his condolences to the sheriff's office and families of the slain officers.
