"I know that Eric B.is president, but I'm here 'cause I want to be governor of NY state", Nixon told the crowd.
Last week, she held a fundraiser which, according to the New York Times, included enthusiastic support for legalization. On The Wendy Williams Show, Nixon said: "There's such an appetite for real progressive change in NY state, I'm absolutely for the legalization of marijuana".
Cuomo moved further earlier this year, directing the state Health Department to study the impacts of legalizing recreational marijuana.
She added: "If there was more political courage coming out of Albany, we would have done this already".
Nixon said people of color are arrested at high rates for using marijuana, something white people do "with impunity". She also argued legalizing marijuana could boost tax revenue and provide job opportunities for farmers.
Iran Condemns Airstrike on Syrian Base
While Assad and his allies deny perpetrating chemical weapons attacks, the global community continues to collect damning evidence. Israel viewed that and all other Iranian military forces in Syria as an unacceptable threat to the security fo the Jewish state.
Nine states and the District of Columbia have legalized the recreational use of marijuana. NY state does have a medical marijuana program, though it is extremely restrictive.
The New York Times first reported on Nixon's willingness to legalize the plant earlier this month, based on comments she'd made at a private fundraiser.
"I believe we should legalize it because I don't think people should be penalized and punished for using it, but I think that it should be highly regulated", McCray said in the joint appearance with Mayor Bill de Blasio.
Marijuana companies are already moving into NY, taking advantage of what they see as momentum in the industry.
"A real Democrat doesn't slash taxes on the wealthy", she said.
And police reform advocates have assailed de Blasio for continuing to embrace "broken windows" policing, a policing method that targets smaller crimes to stave off larger ones. While that store is specifically for medical marijuana - which is allowed in a restricted fashion under New York's law - the company hopes to pivot to a retail business if New York's legislature legalizes the plant.
