Could it be a trial balloon for VW's first US pickup truck since the little Rabbit in the late 1970s?
The pickup is expected to make its North American debut Wednesday as a concept vehicle, allowing VW to gauge interest and determine if production is warranted.
A smaller Tiguan concept announced last week will make it way over to the USA before 2020 from the brand's production plant in China.
Automotive News reports that VW may unveil a unibody pickup concept along side the previously reported five-passenger Atlas concept. Ford Motor Co. says an expanded light-truck lineup will account for 86 percent of its USA sales volume by 2020, up sharply from about 70 percent today. Sources told the news site that the yet unnamed pickup could be assembled at the company's Chattanooga, Tennessee plant as well.
"Diess has supported it from a very early phase in the project", one VW official, who declined to be named because the plans are not yet public, said about the planned pickup.
