Gorakhpur Lok Sabha constituency on Sunday witnessed a polling percentage of around 43 per cent while Phulpur saw a turnout of around 37.39% per cent at the end of the day, Election Commission sources said.
Phulpur/Gorakhpur: As the Samajwadi Party gears to take on the BJP in Sunday's parliamentary by-elections in Gorakhpur and Phulpur, it has found the ideal answer to its rival's RSS campaign machinery - but from an unexpected quarter. A constituency won by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on five successive occasions, the saffron party not only has to win Gorakhpur but also retain, if not increase, Adityanath's 2014 victory margin of almost 3.13 lakh votes.
In the Bhabua and Jehanabad Assembly constituencies in Bihar, where bypolls were also held, the voter turnout was 54.03 per cent and 50.06 per cent respectively, he said.
Ten candidates are in the fray from Gorakhpur, while 22 candidates are contesting from Phulpur.
Tight security arrangements have been made for voting in the two seats in politically crucial Uttar Pradesh.
"But Mayawati's appeal to her supporters to vote for the Samajwadi candidate has galvanised them".
Met Opera sacks legendary conductor Levine after abuse probe
The Metropolitan Opera on Monday fired longtime conductor James Levine, citing "credible evidence" of "sexually abusive" conduct. Levine started conducting from a chair in late 2001 and tremors in his left arm and leg became noticeable a few years later.
The stage is set for a high-voltage contest between BJP, Congress and BSP-supported SP.

Along with these names, nine Independent candidates and nine other contenders are in foray for the Phulpur seat.
Maurya, after casting his vote along with his wife and son, said the victory margins will be big in both seats in favour of the Bharatiya Janata Party. The BJP has fielded Kaushalendra Singh Patel from Phulpur and Upendra Dutt Shukla from Gorakhpur against the SP's Pravin Nishad and Nagendra Pratap Singh Patel, respectively.
RJD MLA Mundrika Singh Yadav's death necessitated the by-poll in the Jehanabad seat. Gorakhpur has 970 polling centres and 2,141 polling stations.
The BJP is hopeful of retaining the Bhabhua Assembly seat riding on a sympathy wave for Anand Bhushan Pandey whose death at the age of 48 has necessitated the bypoll. The party, which had joined hands with SP in the assembly polls held past year, has fielded Manish Mishra from Phulpur.
