It's full of pop culture references and wonderfully creative action, often to the beat of '80s rock music. Ready Player One's soundtrack is bursting with blood-pumping anthems from Joan Jett, Van Halen, Twisted Sister and Depeche Mode. You're watching a master at work, one who is loving every moment of this movie too.
"I think it pisses God off when you walk by the color purple in a field and don't notice it". It's an absolute blast. Taking place in, of course, a dystopia in the near future, the story is a smorgasbord of pop culture allusions that come so fast and furious that those attempting to keep track of it all will likely give up after the first hour. There were so many people - as much as half the world - that became entirely invested, nearly addicted, in the virtual universe James Halliday, creator of the OASIS, built, but no context was given. You may not look like the person you want to be or the avatar you want to be", says Sheridan on a stopover in Toronto, "but you are you and there is nothing you can do about that. The quirky loner - played brilliantly by Mark Rylance (Bridge of Spies) - is truly the sole survivor of the screenwriters' scouring of the novel. Never far behind is the evil Nolan Sorrento (Ben Mendelsohn), who wants control of the OASIS for financial gain.
And when the movie is not having fun, there is some serious contemplation by Ernest Cline, who wrote the Ready Player One novel in 2011, and shares its screenplay credit with Zak Penn (The Incredible Hulk). Longtime Spielberg cinematographer Janusz Kaminski is behind the camera, while Alan Silvestri provides the score. Spielberg's skillful pacing keeps the visual stimulation focused, such as in a thrilling vehicle chase early on where Wade races the time-traveling Delorean from "Back to the Future" against a fleet of competitors.
But the experience was even more overwhelming once he went inside the room, and realised Spielberg would be operating the camera himself, at times from just two feet away. "As a video game expert", said Andrew, "I enjoyed the special effects and all the video game references throughout this movie, like Halo".
A lengthy sequence set in a pixel-perfect recreation of Stanley Kubrick's The Shining had me cooing with appreciation, but it's hard to imagine your average 12-year-old being quite so awed. While references to "camper moves" and "the bandwidth riots" made my eyes roll, there were at least less allusions to Marie Curie's clitoris than in the source material (0 vs 1 if you're counting). Blink and you'll miss Letitia Wright ("Black Panther") as a virtual extra here. Perhaps this time he's overdone it, as by the final sentimental exchange in Ready Player One I was just about ready to drown in all the syrup.

Lloyd attend the Hollywood premiere of Steven Spielberg's new movie this week where he was reunited with a replica of the DeLorean time machine.
The plot follows Wade and his gamer friends as they chase down the keys and clues that will take them to the egg. It proves exhilarating rather than exhausting, as unlike modern action directors, he knows how to pace these scenes and does not employ a rapid editing style that obscures what we see.
This weekend, Spielberg fans can rejoice in his latest blockbuster.
Ready Player One is set in 2045. The player who finds it will win the title of "Player One" and become the gamekeeper of the OASIS, as well as rich beyond their wildest imagination. The company noted in the announcement that it had not cleared this with Spielberg, a fact that has become readily apparent in the last few days.
