Twitter and Reddit users have been reporting this alarming, "witch-like" cackle coming from their devices - sometimes unprompted or as a weird response to requests to turn off the lights. Another Twitter user said an Echo whistled without prompting.
Since the incident, dozens of other Alexa users have reported of the laughing instances. While Alexa can laugh on command, the laugh that occurs on its own is apparently much creepier and closer to a cackle than the playful giggle that Alexa performs when asked.
During the past couple of weeks, some people have heard Alexa randomly start laughing at nothing at all, without being prompted.
Amazon has yet to respond to inquiries requesting more information about the error, BuzzFeed said. But it's unlikely that Alexa has become sentient and is intentionally frightening users with the laughs. Freaked @SnootyJuicer and I out.
