Michelle Myers claims she has a rare condition called foreign accent syndrome which causes her to "sleep with a headache and wake up sounding like Mary Poppins".
The rare condition usually accompanies a stroke, neurological damage, or underlying health issue.
Myers also has Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, a condition that causes bruising and painful joints - and it turned her accent British. Several other sufferers of Foreign Accent Syndrome have captured worldwide attention in recent years, such as 48-year-old Terri White from Yorkshire in Northern England.
Myers's situation is especially peculiar since her accent doesn't sound like a speech disruption-on the contrary, it comes across as quite refined. They all started with an extreme headache and ended in a freakish change in speech - first Irish, then Australian and now British, the station reports. She has never been to Ireland, Australia, and the United Kingdom, but a rare medical condition made her speak the native accents of the said countries.
"It was a joke in my family that I'm bad at accents, so I think when they heard how good it was, they knew I wasn't kidding!" she said. After suffering headaches throughout her life, in the past she has woken up speaking with Irish and Australian accents. In 2010, a woman in Virginia reportedly spoke with a Russian accent after she fell down the stairs and hit her head, says The Washington Post. "I feel like a different person".
Oxfam revelations lead to more accountability for charities
If Oxfam doesn't fully cooperate "then I can not work with them anymore as an aid delivery partner", she said. The news comes after Oxfam workers were accused of using prostitutes in Haiti following the 2010 quake .
Myers spends time with her seven kids wondering when the sound of her voice will ever change. It cleared itself up shortly thereafter, but a subsequent stroke sent her into a spiral of different accents that each last just weeks.
Her lack of a Texas' twang makes people question whether or not she's faking. In 2016, Lisa Alamia from Texas found her accent has changed to British after waking up from a jaw surgery.
As she watched a video of herself speaking normally with ABC, she stated that "I'm sad... The person I am now has been through so much compared to this person". "The person that I am now have been through a lot".
"Some people think it's physiological; others think it's psychological. We just really want to be taken seriously and if it is something that's going to hurt me, help me", declares Myers.
